Question of the Week

Tuesday we asked: Framingham's Bose Corp. has sold manufacturing plants with a combined 3,500 employees in Mexico and Malaysia for an undisclosed sum. The plants were sold to Flextronics International Ltd., and the facilities will continue producing Bose products, with the company saying the arrangement will help improve distribution.
Is outsourcing a smart move for manufacturers?
  • The issues addressed by this question are far too complex for a simple yes/no answer. Every company has it's own priorities, culture, economics, and vision. So each company's circumstances determine whether outsourcing is right for them.
  • This is largely an unanswerable question. Every scenario is unique. In Bose's case they seem like they are likely making Bose employees Flextronics employees, both overseas. While offshoring seems attractive, when you add up the added support staff, maintaining US facilities, and travel costs. One has to wonder how much cheaper it really is.
  • Global competition and the fact that a business must compete with the same relative costs of operating or even less than their competitors to stay alive unfortunately says outsource due to Cost of goods, production.
