Top Picks
Want a list of what we'd buy if we were starting from scratch? When we hit the trail, this is the equipment we carry in our packs. Unlike the CleverHiker Gear Guide, where we highlight a wide range of exceptional choices, this page is where we talk about our personal favorites. We cover everything from backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags, to clothing, gadgets, and small accessories.
Does Bear Spray Really Work?
You’ve packed a can of bear spray and are heading off to your favorite wildlife-populated backcountry. But somewhere in the back of your head you’re wondering… if I have to use this stuff, will it really work? Well, for the most part, the answer is: yes. In short, bear spray subdues and distracts bears the majority of the time. Of even equal importance: bear spray saves bear lives.
10 Best Sleeping Pads
Great sleep in the backcountry can be surprisingly tough to come by. You’d think after a long day of hiking, most backpackers would be tired enough to pass out face first in their rehydrated mashed potatoes. But that’s not always the case. Packing a top-notch sleeping pad can help you take your backcountry sleep game to the next level, and it’s critical for comfort and warmth.

GEAR PICK OF THE WEEK
Gregory Citro & Juno 24 H20 Daypacks

We've been testing Gregory's updated Citro 24 H20 (men’s) and Juno 24 H20 (women’s) daypacks for the past few months and we're really impressed with them. So much so, that we're featuring them on our 10 Best Daypacks LIst. They come with hydration bladders, so you'll save money and won't need to worry about finding a specific bladder to fit your pack. The Citro and Juno daypacks are also comfy, supportive, and they have a simple, yet organized design. The suspended mesh back provides good ventilation and effectively transfers weight to the padded hipbelt. Though small, one of our favorite features is the magnetic clip on the sternum strap that keeps the hydration bladder hose close for quick use.

If you already have a hydration bladder you like, or you prefer to use water bottles, you can also get the Citro 24 and Juno 24 without the bladder.
