🚘️ This Tool Can Help You KO Your Local Car Dealership |
Dealerships have a home-court advantage when you negotiate the price of a vehicle. |
You can read as many car-buying articles as possible. (Shameless plug: we wrote about how to buy a new or used vehicle.) In addition to experience, your salesperson – or the dealership manager – often holds an information advantage. |
It can be painful to look up the market value of a vehicle you want on multiple sites, track down a potential option and then have the negotiation fall through. But you must do your homework if you want to properly spar at a car dealership. |
A Clark listener recently uncovered a tool for us that may add one more arrow to your quiver. Jerry in California claims to have used caredge.com to gain leverage in negotiations. |
“The key bit of info they have vs. others like KBB or Edmunds is down to a specific VIN, they can tell you how many days a dealer has had a given car,” Jerry says. |
“I found the Mercedes EV I wanted had been sitting at the dealer for over 150 days. When I told the salesperson I knew how long they had it, the discounts started flying.” |
I ran a quick search for a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe within 100 miles. And the tool listed 50 vehicles for me, sortable by distance, mileage, price – and, sure enough, days on market. Fourteen had been on the market for 100+ days. |
I couldn’t find a lot of information on how valid those numbers are. But Jerry gave a strong anecdote. And it’s feasible that CarEdge is pulling that data, especially if it’s scraping vehicle listings from dealership websites. |
It’s worth checking out if you’re buying a car soon, as the market has shifted. Many dealerships have vehicles sitting on their lots for too long and need to move inventory. |
