| 1. WHITE HOUSE ORDERS ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS TO SKIP W.H.C.A. DINNER: Trump administration officials won’t attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, after the president ordered them to boycott the Saturday’s annual event. The president, who is skipping the event for a third consecutive year, will hold a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the same night. CNN: “The order was issued Tuesday morning by White House Cabinet Secretary Bill McGinley, who announced that all Trump administration officials are being ordered to boycott the dinner, scheduled for Saturday night. An administration official adds that the order came from Trump personally, though staffers have been trying to talk him out of it. … Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, responded to the boycott saying: ‘We're looking forward to an enjoyable evening of celebrating the First Amendment and great journalists past, present, and future.’ In previous administrations, both the president and vice president traditionally attended the gala event which promotes the First Amendment. The last president to skip the dinner was Ronald Reagan in 1981, who declined because he was recovering from an assassination attempt.” 2. TRUMP TO VISIT BUCKINGHAM PALACE FOR STATE DINNER: Donald Trump will finally visit Buckingham Palace for a state dinner in June. Many Brits aren’t happy about the president’s upcoming visit as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been two years in the making. Associated Press: “Many American presidents have visited the monarch, but just two—George W. Bush and Barack Obama—were honored with a state visit and its accompanying pomp and pageantry, including a horse-drawn carriage ride and a royal banquet at Buckingham Palace. Rarer still is the announcement of a state visit just weeks before it takes place. But talk of the visit has been contentious ever since Prime Minister Theresa May invited Trump just days after he took office in January 2017. The trip has been delayed amid concerns about Trump’s reception in the U.K. and Britain’s extended crisis over Brexit, which has consumed most of the government’s political energy. … In addition to his second meeting with the queen, Trump will also hold talks with May, whose handling of Brexit the president has repeatedly criticized. One detail that’s still TBD is whether Trump will be granted the honor of addressing Parliament, as did presidents Ronald Reagan and Obama.” 3. J.F.K. AIRPORT IS GETTING A ROOFTOP POOL: John F. Kennedy International Airport will soon be home to one of New York’s newest rooftop pools. The airport’s forthcoming T.W.A. Hotel, which opens this summer, announced it will open an infinity pool with views of the runway and planes taking off. Travel & Leisure: “Gerber Group—the nightlife company behind fashionable venues like Mr. Purple and The Campbell Apartment—will be operating the onsite pool, alongside the Sunken Lounge, a bar space inside the hotel. The pool will be open year-round, with a pool bar and observation deck. The pool is capable of being heated up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the water purifies itself completely every 30 minutes. Guests will be able to recline in loungers while overlooking the airport’s Runway 4 Left/22 Right. The runway is more than 12,000 feet long and is used by major airlines like JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, and Lufthansa. On a clear day, guests at the pool deck will be able to look beyond the runway to the waters of Jamaica Bay.” |
