Dare I call it soulful? Maybe I just did.” ABC and NBC announced plans to pre-empt regular programming today and Friday for the first public hearings of the impeachment inquiry. CBS and PBS announced their live coverage last week. Think OTT, act locally . This could well be the new slogan among advertisers in a market where consumers no longer distinguish between linear and OTT viewing environments, and where the latter is magnetically drawing more and more viewers by the week. The onslaught of premium digital video services—many of them ad-supported or with an AVOD tier, and all with enhanced targeting abilities—provides a ripe opportunity for local advertisers . “The definition of what ‘local’ is has pivoted with technology,” says Rachel Williamson, President of Gamut, a media company specializing in local OTT advertising solutions, owned by Cox Media Group, adding that four years ago, “we started developing deep relationships with premium content providers and began to marry national content within local markets. This helped our local clients reach a bigger audience and complemented what they were doing with their local linear content.” For more on how advertisers are looking to maintain the reach of their local TV buys as OTT consumption, go to Cynopsis’ OTT Special Report. Cable, satellite and telco services will incur net losses of 1.5 million subscribers in 4Q19, forecasts Pivotal Research Group analyst Jeff Wlodarczak, versus a net loss of 2.1 million in 3Q19. Cable-based TV platforms will number 48 million in the fourth quarter, satellite will account for 26.5 million and telco 8.5 million, according to projections. PBS’ Nightly Business Report, launched in 1979 and produced by CNBC since 2013, will end production by the end of the year. “The NBR’ co-anchors, executive producer and entire CNBC team have been strong partners in delivering this trusted business news service,” said Cynthia Fenneman, President and CEO of American Public Television, the show’s distributor. “This is smart television which will be deeply missed.” |

TECH TALK Advocacy group FreeWheel Council for Premium issued a call for industry-wide adoption of a universal ad ID , saying that increased fragmentation of TV and video viewing has resulted in an urgent need for universal creative standards. “Establishing a universal standard through Ad-ID is one of the most effective improvements that can be done to drive scale in a converged world of premium video,” said James Rothwell, VP, Global Agency, Brand and Industry Relations at FreeWheel. “This single step can have hugely positive implications on downstream processes and the performance of cross-screen campaigns and the FWC urges the industry to embrace this standard as soon as possible.” In addition to Comcast, FWC represents A+E Networks, Discovery, Fox, NBCUniversal, Turner and Univision.
