Commencement 2019
Some 14,000 proud relatives and friends were on hand this week to watch their loved ones graduate from the Institute. Those gathered on Killian Court Friday also heard Michael Bloomberg deliver the Commencement address, in which he announced his $500 million Beyond Carbon initiative.

Bloomberg tells MIT graduates: “We can’t wait to act” on climate change // The Boston Globe
During MIT’s 2019 Commencement exercises, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg detailed plans for his new initiative aimed at tackling climate change. “This has gone from a scientific challenge to a political problem,” said Bloomberg, “and it’s time for everyone to recognize that climate change is the challenge of our time.”

Affectionately known as the “Brass Rat,” MIT’s class ring is redesigned by members of each graduating class. Since its 1929 debut, the Brass Rat has become a distinctive symbol of the Institute, worn proudly by many of its 138,000 alumni. A new video highlights the unique process by which the Brass Rat is dreamed up and created. (The MIT graduate ring, known as the “Grad Rat,” is redesigned in a similar process every five years.)
