January 1 is the 119th anniversary of the Constitution of Australia, when the British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia united to form states of the Commonwealth of Australia. This process is now referred to as the Federation of Australia.
