Dear voornaam, I hope this email finds you healthy and safe. I can honestly say that 2020 has been the most challenging year of our time. No one has been left immune to the hardships that this deadly pandemic has inflicted on the world. Lost jobs, loved ones, and missed opportunities—these are incalculable losses. But here we are. We made it. As 2020 comes to an end, I reflect on what Sierra Club Maine members and supporters have helped to accomplish through it all. This election we were able to help 70% of our endorsed environmental and social justice candidates in Maine get elected. We created a new robust volunteer onboarding process to better welcome and support Mainers in achieving their environmental goals. We continue to protect Maine’s Westen Region and work with the First Nations in Canada by striving to stop the CMP Corridor. By hiring a Grassroots Climate Action Organizer, we are better poised to support Climate Action Teams across the state, supporting them in implementing local climate solutions. With 2021 just hours away, I am optimistic about what’s to come. With a new President who will protect the environment, a COVID-19 vaccine, and the potential to tie the Senate, I am confident that 2021 will bring positive change. 2021 also brings new opportunities for Sierra Club Maine. This year we will: Launch an Outings for All program with the goal of providing equitable access to the outdoors for everyone. Work toward changing the ownership structure of Maine’s two largest utility companies to be consumer owned, allowing for more renewable energy and providing the cost savings necessary to invest in infrastructure. Create a new advocacy training series for volunteers so they can effectively lobby their legislators to champion pro-environmental laws and policies. Pass legislation to create a Maine Green Bank which will provide more financing opportunities for climate solution projects and provide equitable, low-interest loans to those who otherwise are not able to afford it. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but if 2020 is any indication, anything is possible with you by our side. Here’s to 2021. With gratitude and hope, |
