When we put this series together, we of course wanted to zoom out and see how the site ballooned from a dating service to a global juggernaut, but more importantly we wanted to zoom in on how it’s become a unique resource for many of the topics that we cover on a daily basis: travel, wellness, cars, whiskey, style, books, cocktails and cooking. For all of those categories, our experts assembled guides to the channels you need to know, and profiled the one essential YouTuber that's making waves.

But because YouTube has its tentacles in everything from culture to sports to politics, our reporters dug into a few additional questions that they’ve always wondered about, like why late-night TV pales in comparison to YouTube shows and why people are obsessed with a nebulous genre we've dubbed "ambience videos."
