| | | Question of the Week | | | Tuesday we asked: Just before Thanksgiving, a federal judge slammed the brakes on an expansion of overtime by the U.S. Department of Labor to cover workers making up to $47,476 annually that was set to begin Dec. 1. Many employers had already instituted changes to deal with the threshold increase from $23,600 and the ruling now leaves many employers in tough spots, after either giving out raises or instituting new time management protocols. | How is your business dealing with the halt to the overtime law change? |  | - This was a major overreach by the Obama Administration. I am in favor of increasing the limits but "you can't jump a large chasm in a single leap"
- Similar to the tech tax, government is interfering with businesses. With the tech tax, Deval Patrick and the Massachusetts legislature passed a law so complex they could figure it out. After spending weeks to understand and comply with the tax it was rescinded. This time the federal government in an overreach that effected virtually all businesses, the government more than doubled a standard and impacted many workplace rules causing disruption in businesses across Massachusetts. Now, that won't take place either. Wouldn't it be nice if business leaders could focus on growing their businesses?
- There are two serious problems the proposed regulations. First, it puts an undue burden on small businesses which simply cannot afford the added payroll expenses. Second, it takes certain employees with real management potential out of the “get the job done" mode and puts them into the “hourly employee" mode, possibly limiting their managerial development and earning potential for the long run.
