Tech security tip: Totally normal things that put you in danger

Change your passwords. Don't click that link. Don't share your personal information with strangers. We will always remind you about these basic precautions. But it's not enough anymore. Just answering the phone with one word can compromise your security and privacy nowadays. Here are three things you do every day that put you in danger.

Quick tip of the day

Got an Amazon Echo? Be sure to pop into your Alexa app settings for your device and turn off this privacy setting.

Amazon Sidewalk is basically a mesh network that extends your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection range by up to a mile — and it’s on by default.

Amazon promises the Sidewalk network uses three layers of encryption and that your neighbors won’t be able to see your data. Ultimately, your tech will be connected to a network you can’t control. I say opt out.

  • Inside the Alexa app, tap More followed by Settings.
  • Tap Account Settings, then Amazon Sidewalk.
  • Turn Amazon Sidewalk off if you do not want to participate.

What would you do if you lost all your photos?

What would you do if you lost all your photos?

I've heard from callers over the years who lost their precious memories — photos, videos and other files — when a phone or computer bit the dust. They were heartbroken, and I would be, too.

I can't tell you how important it is to back up your data. My pick is IDrive. It's encrypted, private and works with PCs, Macs, servers, iPhones, Androids and more. To make things easy, everything syncs to one account.

It's affordable, too. Plans start at less than $7 a month. Your memories are worth it!
