This Sunday, 3rd of March, join us for World Wildlife Day and discover more about the incredible diversity of life we share our home with.
As we go about our daily lives, we often forget about the variety of wildlife we share planet Earth with, and how deeply connected we are to nature. This huge variety of animals and plants, and the places they live, is called biodiversity. And, together, they provide us with essentials like food, drinking water, clean air, medicines, and shelter.
For example, our oceans support an incredible variety of wildlife − from tiny plankton to the enormous blue whale. Scientists have identified more than 200,000 species in the oceans but this is likely to be a small fraction of what’s out there! There may well be millions of marine species.
Unfortunately, the oceans, like other environments, are facing a crisis. Eight million tonnes of plastic are leaking into our oceans every year, and many species mistake plastic for food. An estimated 90 per cent of seabirds and 50 per cent of marine turtles have plastic in their stomachs. It’s even entered our food chain. As we approach World Wildlife Day, please show you care for people and nature. Join us in calling for a global agreement to stop marine plastics pollution.
