| | 📦️ Late FedEx Founder Lived Interesting Life | FedEx founder Fred Smith died over the weekend, as America lost one of its most interesting entrepreneurs. | Smith conceived of FedEx as a Yale student, getting a C grade on a 1965 undergraduate paper, arguing that “an increasingly automated economy would depend on fast and dependable door-to-door shipping of small packages containing computer parts.” | Sixty years later, the company employs more than 500,000 people and generates about $90 billion in annual revenue. | Some highlights from his life: | With mounting debts, banks rejected FedEx’s loan applications. Down to the company’s last $5,000 in the mid-1970s, Smith allegedly went to Las Vegas and hit the blackjack tables, turning it into $27,000 and saving the company. Flew planes as a teenager and later served two tours in Vietnam as a Marine pilot. Later, he provided personal planes for a prisoner swap with Russia and to help the government ship swabs early in COVID-19. Served as president of the DKE fraternity when President George W. Bush was a pledge and was a pallbearer at Senator John McCain’s funeral. Among his innovations: creating the hub system now widely used in the airfreight industry and bringing bar codes to retail packaging. | | 📊 Stat of the Day | 🚘️ 2: Seconds -- which is more time than the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X “hypercar” needs to go from 0 to 60. With a top speed of 233 mph, a twin-turbo V-8 engine combined with “electrification” tech, the hybrid sports car produces 1,064 horsepower and will cost in the neighborhood of $200,000. |
