The 3-2-1 Rule of Backup

Do you know the 3-2-1 rule of backup?

• 3 copies of your important data (your live production copy, plus two additional backup copies)
• 2 different types of media used to store backups (e.g., hard disks, LTO-tape and cloud storage)
• 1 backup copy stored off-site for disaster recovery

Keeping a copy of your data offsite is crucial. A file deleted by accident can be restored from your local backup. However, an offsite backup is invaluable when it comes to unexpected occurrences, such as natural disasters. These days, many threats are actually manmade: hacking, viruses or ransomware.

Only a backup with a physical "air gap" between your system and the security copies, can prevent your data from these attacks. Each storage technology  - disk, LTO tape and cloud - offers solutions to achieve this level of security.
