What you need to know

  • The Berlin Wall crumbled 35 years ago next month, marking the beginning of the end for Soviet totalitarianism. Ronald Reagan, defying many political advisors, spoke 6 words that helped change the course of history:  â€œMr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”. Today, the wall’s relevance feels stronger now than at any point since it vanished. Current Russian leader Vladimir Putin, a KGB agent during the Cold War, seeks to rebuild the Russian glory of old, forging alliances with American foes in China and North Korea, and reopening divisions between East and West. Tensions between the United States and Russia have reached a fever pitch not felt since the last kicks of the Cold War, when the wall became a global symbol in the ideological contest between capitalism and communism, democracy and autocracy.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released a draft motorized travel management plan for the remote and stunning Henry Mountains and Dirty Devil area—a plan that will determine where off-road vehicle (ORV) use is allowed in this landscape for decades to come. The BLM is accepting public comment through Saturday, October 26. This is your chance to help defend the Dirty Devil.

Quote of the Day

"Government is necessary to preserve our freedom, it is an instrument through which we can exercise our freedom; yet by concentrating power in political hands, it is also a threat to freedom. Even though the men who wield this power initially be of good will and even though they be not corrupted by the power they exercise, the power will both attract and form men of a different stamp.”
― Milton Friedman

Who is going on vacation, carrying armfuls of clothes, saying, "I'll pack when we get there?"
