Give a tax-deductible donation In today’s briefing: The bizarre menu at Florida's newest Jewban deli, 'Jeopardy' host in jeopardy, why the Sabbath oven is confounding cooks, and more. OUR LEAD STORY 💊 ISTOCK Drugs took my congregant’s life. We can help stop others from suffering in silence
Nearly 100,000 people died from a drug overdose in the United States last year, a dramatic increase from 2019. Rabbi Eliyahu Schusterman, a Chabad rabbi in Atlanta who lost a congregant to an overdose, says “we need to start talking about addiction more openly in our Jewish communities.”
Learning from the experience: In a moving essay, Rabbi Schusterman writes about incorporating wisdom from 12-step programs into his Shabbat sermons. “At first, I’d get some funny stares,” he says. “But as time has progressed, I’ve found that people are increasingly willing to explore what these teachings mean for them in their own spiritual journey.”
A lasting legacy: In memory of his congregant, Schusterman launched Jeff’s Place – a space that connects people who are struggling with support and resources. He is also part of an interfaith task force on drugs.
Quotable: “Normalizing the conversation around addiction is the first step to removing the shame and stigma,” he writes. “Educating ourselves and our fellow communal leaders about this disease is paramount.”

(DENVER POLICE) 4 arrested, 1 at large in killing of student outside Denver Jewish school: Thousands watched a live-streamed memorial service for Shmuel Silverberg, 19, and many Jewish groups called for his murder to be investigated as a hate crime. But the police said it was part of a crime spree Tuesday night that included two carjackings, a burglary and another shooting, by five men who had spent time together in juvenile detention. Four of the suspects are in custody. Read the story >

🍽 Cooks across America are in a stew of confusion because their ovens seem stuck on 350 degrees. The machines are not broken – they’re in Shabbat mode. Avrom Pollak, who helped develop the setting, is baffled each time he hears of someone foiled by it. “It’s not the easiest thing to get into,” he said. “I have some in my house, and I don’t even know how to do it.” (The Wall Street Journal)
😷 Israel was once a model for beating the coronavirus. But it now has one of the world’s highest infection rates, raising questions about waning vaccine efficacy. The country is now pinning its hopes on booster shots which became available today to everyone over age 40. (NYT)

📺 “Friday Night Jews” is a new TV show in Germany aimed at broadening public understanding. This follows earlier state-sponsored initiatives to “Meet a Jew” and “Rent a Jew.” It sounds cringeworthy, but the response from Jewish audiences has been mostly positive. (JTA)
🕯 Shiva call > Paulette Goodman, a Holocaust survivor who became national president of Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), died at 88. “I would like us to go out of business one day, because that would mean society has become accepting of all people and that we don’t have to fight for our gay and lesbian children,” Goodman, who was a young child in Nazi-occupied Paris, said of the group. “I know what it’s like to be a minority and to be threatened with your life. I know what it’s like to be in the closet. I know all too well.”
FROM OUR KITCHEN 🇨🇺 The story behind Florida’s newest Jewban deli: Onion bagels and sweet ham sandwiches? Cuban beef and kasha varnishes? Cuban-Jewish fusion food has been trending for a while now in South Florida, which makes sense: the region is home to hundreds of thousands of Jews, Cubans – and Jewish Cubans. There’s Stephens Deli, the Havana-influenced rebirth of an old Miami Jewish deli, and Surfside’s Josh’s Deli, which helped pioneer the “Jewbano” menu. Now there’s Jewbans Deli Dàle, a food truck and soon-to-be-restaurant whose Cuban and Jewish owners have thrived through the pandemic selling matzo ball soup and decidedly non-kosher mash-ups. Read the story > An ode to the black and white cookie:As we all can relate, our summer intern, Rebecca Salzhauer, has fond childhood memories of this beloved baked good. So she explored its backstory. “Like many famous New Yorkers,” she writes, “the black and white cookie’s history begins with a tale of reinvention, where mythology supplants fact.”Read the story >
ON THE CALENDAR 🗓 GETTY IMAGES On this day in history: Jerry Lewis died on Aug. 20, 2017, at 91. Born Joseph Levitch, the iconic actor, comedian and entertainer would go on to star in more than 60 films. “He was an exalted version of the Borscht Belt tummler,” Benjamin Ivry wrote in our obituary, “a hired entertainer who dresses as a waiter and deliberately falls into a hotel swimming pool to get a rise from overfed vacationers.” His name also became synonymous with the annual telethon he hosted for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
