It's Election Day, Michiganders! 🗳️ |
After weeks of campaign stops, political rallies, and mailboxes stuffed with election mailers, we have officially reached Election Day. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Voters have the right to cast ballots if they are in line at a polling place by 8 p.m. Results will be updated here on Election Day, as local and county clerks release results once the polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. 5 highlights from Michigan’s historic 2024 presidential campaign season |
Considered a key swing state in the race to the White House, Michigan has hosted about 80 events or campaign rallies this year featuring either onetime Democratic frontrunner, President Joe Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s nominee; her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz; Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump; or his running mate, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, of Ohio. MLive will revisit 5 highlights from these historic 2024 presidential campaigns and review some of the top headlines from the election cycle. Tell us: With more than one-third of active registered voters already having cast their ballots ahead of Tuesday’s election, we want to hear from you about which presidential candidate you voted for. |

Michigan is seeing more whooping cough, which can be dangerous for kids |
On the rise: Health officials have identified at least 830 cases of pertussis so far this year, surpassing last year’s total and blowing past the annual average of 596 cases from 2017-19. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging residents to get vaccinated against the disease, which is commonly known as whooping cough. Also in health: Some health and education representatives say they want to see state funds used on school nurses, adding to healthcare staff improvements seen in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and better connecting Michigan students with services. Start training: With just two months of 2024 left, some people may already be thinking about their New Years’ resolutions. If it’s going to be a health-focused one, check out these early 2025 5K races that could help you keep your resolution on track. |

Some winter weather warnings getting an overhaul from National Weather Service |
Changes coming: A few of the long-time winter weather watches, warnings and advisories are being simplified by the National Weather Service. A wind chill advisory is changing to cold weather advisory. Wind chill watch changes to extreme cold watch. Wind chill warning changes to extreme cold warning. Hard freezes have also been discontinued and changed to just freeze watches and freeze warnings. Rain on the way: Several more rounds of rain this week will give much of Michigan significant rainfall totals. A three-day rainy period will hit northern and western Lower Michigan, along with southeast Michigan getting some showery periods. From Saginaw to Lansing to Jackson and southeast into the Flint, Ann Arbor and Detroit areas may have only one-half inch or less of total rain through Wednesday. The rain over north and west Lower Michigan should cut the drought status in half eventually. On the other side: Two sister meteor showers are already flashing across night skies — and will peak a week apart. The Southern Taurids will reach their zenith early Tuesday morning and the Northern Taurids on Nov. 12. |

Meet the Lions fan going viral for wearing a cheese grater hat in Packers territory |
Going viral: When you’re a lifelong Detroit Lions fan married to a Green Bay Packers fan, you’ve got to go all out when the two teams face off. And that’s just what David Bodine did. Bodine, 35, sported a foam cheese grater-shaped hat at Lambeau Field on Sunday as the Lions beat the Packers 24-14. Since the game aired, photos of Bodine in his cheese grater hat have been posted on social media by ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Barstool Sports and more. Playing time: The Detroit Lions won’t waste a moment in getting Jameson Williams back on the field with his two-game suspension coming to an end. Dan Campbell said the wide receiver has remained in the team facility, working out, running and attending team meetings during his time away. Off the team: The Detroit Lions have waived defensive lineman Chris Smith and linebacker Abraham Beauplan as speculation surrounds the team and league ahead of the NFL trade deadline. |

West Michigan’s Dutch Christmas market makes national destination list |
Drawing attention: Travel + Leisure rounded up 10 European-style Christmas markets to visit in the U.S., including Holland's Kerstmarkt. The annual event got a nod on the magazine’s list for its traditional Dutch food, and artisan demonstrations. This year's market will feature dog sled demos, handbell concerts, appearances from Santa & Mrs. Claus, Sinterklaas, the Dickens Carolers, and other musical guests. Seeing the lights: The final touches are being put on the illuminated Christmas walkthrough known as Glenlore Trails. Located in Commerce Township in Metro Detroit, tickets are now on sale for “Aurora,” which opens on Friday, November 15. The approximately one mile trail through the woods features holiday light and sound displays as well as games and other interactive elements. Setting sail: The winter season has begun at one of Michigan‘s most popular tourist destinations, Mackinac Island. Beginning Nov. 1, Shepler’s started winter service, with boats running daily between Mackinac Island and the St. Ignace docks. |
