Best Strategies to Secure Against Ransomware

Ransomware attacks impact businesses of all sizes and sectors. However, with a carefully planned backup and disaster recovery strategy, it’s possible to mitigate the risks. Intelligent backup mediums are necessary to ensure maximum security.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of disaster recovery techniques in use:

• Cloning/Replication – individual files/folders are copied to another location/disk on a repeating schedule (P5 Synchronize)
• Backups – where files/folders are written into ‘containers’ on disk/tape/cloud storage (P5 Backup)

To determine if a disaster recovery strategy will protect against ransomware, take a look at the target storage where your backed up data resides. It is important to determine if ransomware could also encrypt this precious backup copy.

When it comes to selecting target storage, a medium that can be physically disconnected from the host computer is best. Contrary to disks and the cloud, LTO tape can only be accessed when it is mounted in the drive. Even then, keeping multiple copies of data on separate tapes and off-site is a common and inexpensive practice.
