| | | The water finally dropped enough that I could venture into the mountains to fish a brook-trout stream with my friend Margie Kaat, who is perhaps the most avid angler I know. A former golf instructor, she discovered fly fishing late in life, causing her to put down her clubs and dive head-first into her new passion. From April through October, she gets out on the water multiple times per week, usually fishing alone, often in the backcountry. The fishing was pretty slow, but we each caught a few beautiful brookies and enjoyed exploring how the stream had changed after the weeks of high water. True to form, Margie stayed out for hours after I had to leave. I can’t keep up! |

| These waters are affected by geothermal activity, so they warm more quickly than other rivers in the park, but this year's closures are earlier than normal. |
| If you love fishing in the West, this should give you pause. |

| | | | Q: I just got my first fly rod, and I'm terrified I'm going to accidentally break it. What are the best ways to make sure I don't? —Tommy S., Minneapolis, MN (via the Ask MidCurrent form) A: Most fly rods come with some sort of warranty—although many introductory models don't—but breaking a rod can still ruin a fishing trip and leave you waiting weeks (or even months) for repairs. Aside from the hassle and cost of replacements, a broken rod means lost time on the water. The good news is that most rod breakages are preventable. Experienced anglers who care for their gear often go decades without breaking a rod, simply because they understand how rods are designed (and not designed) to bend. Here's how you can ensure that your rod remains in the proper number of sections. Read the full answer here
