It’s been said that it’s a privilege to get to learn about racism, as opposed to experiencing it every day. And as a white parent raising two white children, I’ll be the first to admit I need to do better. If this last week is any indication, it seems that many of you agree.
To that end, we here at HuffPost Parents have put together a hub of stories that will help guide your own conversations with your children. Some of the topics we’ve covered in the past week are an age-by-age guide to talking about race with your kids; things non-Black parents can do in the wake of police brutality; and how to talk to your kids about the George Floyd protests and police brutality.
I know these pieces have helped inform my conversations with my boys over the past week in particular. My sincere hope is that it provides a framework for your own conversations now and going forward.
Below, I’ve also included links to stories about how to protest safely during the coronavirus pandemic, documentaries to watch to educate you more on racism in this country, and children’s books to read to your kids now.
Be safe and well, everyone. P.S. Any Canadians in the crowd? Our cousins at HuffPost Canada have just launched a new weekly newsletter, 'While You Weren't Sleeping,' filled with stories and information for parents. It's like this newsletter, just with more "u"s in words like labor." You can subscribe here.
