Officials announced that the officer would face additional charges after the 95-year-old Australian woman who was hit with a stun gun by a cop in her care home last week passed away on Wednesday. On May 17, dementia sufferer Clare Nowland was frightened by Constable Kristian White and then fell to the ground, breaking her skull. After workers reported that Nowland had stolen a steak knife from the kitchen, White and another detective went to the specialized care home in New South Wales. With the aid of a walker and the knife in her hand, Nowland approached the cops "at a slow pace" when White deployed her stun gun. White was initially charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault. The charges were expected to be upgraded after Nowland succumbed to her injuries at a Cooma hospital. (read more) |

The key to successful investing isn't just about watching your money grow during good times but also keeping it from shrinking during bad times. Investors should keep that in mind as a potential government default looms ā an event that would quickly lead to very bad times. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said earlier this month that a default could happen as soon as June 1 if lawmakers don't pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling. If the U.S. were to default on its debt, it would have dramatic economic and financial consequences. If the government does default, you can expect the economy to make a major hit and the stock and bond markets to get badly rattled. A default could even speed the country into a recession. That's why it's a good time to look at ways to shield your investments from collapse. Here are four steps you should take. (read more) |
