Is the court at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center big enough for two names? We're now going to find out. Eighteen months after the LSU Board of Supervisors named the court at the PMAC for former men's basketball coach Dale Brown, the board voted Friday to add the name of late women's coach Sue Gunter. The entire matter has been boiling in controversy, with Brown supporters decrying the politics behind adding Gunter's name and Gunter supporters complaining about how the process to name the court for Brown got ramrodded thorugh without following proper procedures. Whatever side you're on, ultimately Brown and Gunter's legacies are diminshed by this whole affair, which has been one of the most overwrought issues I think I've ever seen in 33 years of covering LSU athletics. Personally, it makes a big part of me wish no one's name was on the court. The next game on the PMAC's court is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night, when the LSU men's team hosts Texas A&M on the SEC Network. The Tigers haven't won a game since the Truman adminstration ... just kidding. The Tigers haven't won a game in 2023, which in a way actually sounds worse. At least it'll be a couple of hours to kill leading up to the big showdown Sunday between the No. 3 LSU women and No. 1 South Carolina (1 p.m., ESPN). The LSU gymnastics team was on the road Friday at Auburn, a meet that was expected to feature a showdown between LSU All-American Haleigh Bryant and Auburn Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee for the all-around crown. In the end, Auburn won the meet 197.750-197.500 but LSU sophomore Aleah Finnegan stole the show, beating Lee and Bryant for the all-around title with a superb score of 39.800 that included a perfect 10 on vault. It was Finnegan's second-straight meet with a 10 after also getting one on floor last week against Georgia. Friday was opening night for the LSU softball team, which pounded New Mexico 11-3 in a game that was run-ruled after six innings. And in track, LSU's Michaela Rose broke her own school record in the 800 meters at an indoor meet in Lubbock, Texas. Thank you for subscribing and your loyal readership. If we had a basketball court to name, we'd name it for you. No, really, we would. Until next time ... Scott Rabalais |
