Day Off

On the field, 2024 marks a huge comeback for Blue Jays starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi. In 2022, his first season with the team, he struggled to rack up strikes. He improved drastically during the 2023 season, and in the first six starts of 2024, his throws are stronger and more accurate than ever. Off the field, Kikuchi has made a home for himself and his family in Toronto. He tells us how he stays game-ready even on his days off.

“I was too weak to move, let alone play hockey”

When competitive hockey player Tyler McGregor learned his leg would have to be amputated, he thought it spelled the end of his career. A decade later, he’s leading Canada’s national para hockey team. “The 2010 Vancouver Paralympics were on during my time in hospital,” says McGregor. “Seeing those athletes, I had a new vision for my future.”

Biblio Bash 2024

Last Thursday, more than 400 guests, including 38 Canadian authors, gathered at the Toronto Reference Library for the Toronto Public Library’s annual Biblio Bash party. The gala raised over $1 million for library initiatives that support newcomers to Canada, including launching welcome resources in 40 languages and expanding financial literacy programs.
