The petite, gray-haired woman wore mismatched clothing, as if she had dressed with little concern for her appearance. In the waiting room of the emergency veterinary clinic, she sat holding an animal wrapped in a thin blanket. I was waiting for my daughter and her new kitten. A few days before, my daughter had found a sickly kitten next to her college apartment's dumpster. She had scooped up the little feral and begun to nurse the newly named "Lizzie" back to health. Unfortunately, my daughter thought rich food, and lots of it, would revive the weak kitten. Within no time, Lizzie's health was spiraling downward.
