Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Bianna Golodryga

CNN anchor Bianna Golodryga pushed back on Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a Thursday interview for his “anti-Semitic” claim that Israel had “deep pockets” and “control media.”

“Israel is losing out,” Qureshi told Golodryga in an interview on CNN International. “They’re losing the media war, despite their connections. … The tide is turning.”

Golodryga — who was interviewing Qureshi about Israel’s actions in Gaza — inquired, “What are their connections?”

Chuckling, Qureshi responded, “Deep pockets,” prompting Golodryga to ask, “What does that mean?”

“They’re very influential people,” Qureshi replied. “I mean, they control media.”

Golodryga opined, “I mean, I would call that an anti-Semitic remark.”

“Well, you see, the point is, they have a lot of influence, and they get a lot of coverage,” Qureshi said. He spoke for about a minute about conflict in the region and then Golodryga attempted to return to the topic.

"I mean, can we not separate the fact that there are calls for peace … for both sides, for Palestinians and for Israelis, without anti-Semitic talk and rhetoric?”

It's a fantastic example of excellent live interview journalism

MEDIA LOSER:
Chris Cuomo

Cuomo Prime Time host Chris Cuomo took the first few minutes of his show to address the stunning report that he had participated in strategy calls with his brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), and his staffers, regarding how to respond to the governor’s scandals.

This time he is for real sorry. Sorry wasn't good enough for a lot of folks.

Journalists voiced outrage that the top CNN anchor — who has run into trouble in the past for his coverage and handling of this governor brother — was advising Andrew on calls with his staff.

CNN issued a statement chiding Chris Cuomo: "it was inappropriate to engage in conversations that included members of the Governor's staff, which Chris acknowledges," the network said. "He will not participate in such conversations going forward."

Cuomo had some defenders.

Mediaite founder Dan Abrams said that it was entirely expected that the CNN host would support and advise his brother.

“What a fake, utopian world” Cuomo’s critics live in, said Abrams. “This is his brotherOf course he was going to advise his brother!”

Still, the fallout continues...

The A-Block

A Pizzagater Walks Into TPUSA

Jack Posobiec, the notorious pro-Trump internet troll who made a name for himself pushing the Pizzagate conspiracy theory, has been hired by Turning Point USA, the conservative youth group run by Charlie Kirk.

Posobiec rocketed to social media fame as a relentless proponent of Pizzagate, a bizarre theory that claimed Hillary Clinton and her allies ran a child sex-trafficking ring out of D.C.’s Comet Ping Pong.

Posobiec has now joined right-wing website Human Events as an editor. In a press release, Human Events said he was also joining Turning Point USA.

It seems there is no shortage of work in certain conservative media, as long as you're someone who has been famously and repeatedly discredited.

White House Sources Dispute Politico Scoop on Meghan McCain...

Mediaite's Tommy Christopher writes: Politico posted an item claiming that President Joe Biden’s administration “snubbed” The View co-host Meghan McCain, while giving Whoopi Goldberg “the VIP treatment” in the effort to increase confidence in the Covid vaccines — but White House sources refute, and Politico’s own reporting undermines, that claim.

On Friday morning, Politico Playbook — authored by Tara PalmeriEugene DanielsRachael Bade, and Ryan Lizza — featured a banner headline read “W.H. gives Whoopi the VIP treatment — but snubs Meghan McCain.”

The item features a complaint from an unnamed “The View insider” that when McCain offered to be vaccinated live on the air, she didn’t hear back, but Whoopi Goldberg was “treated to a private briefing” on vaccination messaging.

According to White House sources, though, there was no “snub” or “VIP treatment” or anything of the sort, and Politico was told this but did not include it in their reporting.

McCain’s outreach came in early March, and the White House did respond through McCain’s representatives to say that she was not eligible for the vaccine. But crucially, the White House told The View that they would be happy to include McCain once she became eligible.

'Overhyping' Eatery Closures

As restaurants began to shutter 'the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, many forecasted the industry to be ravaged long-term.

So when The National Restaurant Association announced only 14% of food establishments were forced to close permanently during the pandemic, Fox Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd  — a restaurant owner himself — hoped the media would report it as a positive story.

"The media sees itself as so above the public that they never give the public credit," Cowherd complained to his co-host Joy Taylor.

"The media has gotten increasingly overdramatic on everything. Everything’s end of the world."
