Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Combating Hate Crimes For the last four years, I’ve been working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to enact anti-lynching legislation — legislation that has failed in Congress 200 times. This week, both the House and Senate finally passed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, which will make lynching a federal hate crime with a heavier sentence. I’m honored to have played a part in this historic moment and look forward to the president signing this bill into law. Hatred and violence against our fellow Americans should never be tolerated. That’s why I’ve worked to stop hate crimes throughout my time in Congress. At this week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, I was invited to speak on those efforts, which include launching the Senate Caucus on Black-Jewish Relations to combat anti-Semitism and leading a resolution condemning the recent bomb threats against HBCUs. Last year, 29 students from Charleston, Clover, and Richland school districts participated in internships, and we expect that number to double this year as employers ramp up their internships. No student should lack access to opportunity because of where they grew up. Click below to hear testimonials from some of last year’s interns! Click to watch Sincerely, |
