A historically violent weekend, a fight over industrial tax breaks, and more

By Gordon Russell

A bloody weekend: Last weekend was the most violent in recent memory, with 15 shooting incidents reported, many of them in Algiers. Six people were killed, and 12 were injured. No one has been arrested in any of the incidents, according to our story from Missy Wilkinson, Carlie Kollath Wells and Jeff Adelson.

Tax break tug-of-war: Gov. John Bel Edwards pushed changes to an industry-friendly Louisiana tax giveaway that both trimmed the program's sails and allowed local governments to have more of a say in the tax relief granted. The Legislature is mulling a bill that would allow the state constitution to be amended to make the changes permanent. For now, the effort remains alive, Sam Karlin reports.

The 'whole truth': A controversial Slidell pastor who was booked by police with cruelty to juveniles after he taped the mouths shut of several students at his church-affiliated school says he gave the boys a say in their discipline, and they all chose the tape. The Rev. John Raymond says he offered to give a statement to Slidell police but they never got back to him, Sara Pagones reports.

Lingering in the air: The Denka Performance Elastomer plant in LaPlace is the only known U.S. emitter of chloroprene, a known carcinogen. David Mitchell reports that a new study found the chemical in the air near the plant and in the urine of neighbors even when the plant was closed after Hurricane Ida, leading to new calls for better air monitoring around the facility.
