GRUMPY OLD MEN Tuesday night's septuagenarian slap fight was, as we noted above, widely viewed as the "worst" and "most chaotic" debate in modern American history, a veritable "sh** show" as Bash and others said. For all continuing coverage, find all our debate news and video in one place, here. More highlights below... "Stand Back and Stand By" Lots of the media coverage is focusing on this moment, where Trump was asked to condemn white supremacists and specifically asked about the Proud Boys. Trump's comments that they should "stand back and stand by" were quickly slammed by his critics -- and cheered by the Proud Boys themselves. Rick Santorum might have been a little too honest in describing Trump's remarks as him not wanting to say anything bad about people who support him. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said that maybe Trump "misspoke," but did say that he needed to correct it. Trump did attempt to clarify in comments to reporters today, including the bizarre claim that he didn't know who the Proud Boys were. As for the Proud Boys, they're now selling t-shirts with their new motto. Which son? Another moment getting a lot of attention was when Biden brought up his son Beau Biden, who passed away from brain cancer, and Trump interrupted to attack Biden's other son, Hunter Biden. Fox fawns Predictably, Trump's debate performance had numerous defenders on Fox News -- including some who went so far as to slam their colleague's moderation of the debate. Yeah that didn't work The Commission on Presidential Debates basically tossed up their hands and admitted defeat today, acknowledging what a mess the debate was and promising some new "additional structure" to be applied to the upcoming debates. Biden not bailing Media talking heads on multiple channels openly pondered whether the upcoming debates should be cancelled -- but the Biden campaign was quick to swat that suggestion down. Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris was adamant they wanted to take every opportunity to speak to the American people. 10-Point Lead A new poll of Pennsylvania voters shows Democratic presidential nominee Biden with a 10 point lead over President Trump on the eve of the first debate. 6.5.0 |
