Dear reader,

Let's start with the good news - it's nearly the weekend.

If you're like me, Saturday can't come quick enough: the mornings have been darker, the weather markedly more chilly over the last few days.

Winter is coming

This week has brought the sense that a difficult winter is on the way, with evidence the NHS is already struggling under the strain of Covid and other illness. Covid rates are high, and the army has been drafted in to help across Scotland.

Perhaps not surprisingly, then, our analysis of Scottish Covid rates versus those in England got a lot of attention this week, as have concerns COP26 may lead to further restrictions in Scotland.

We will continue to work hard to explain where things are going in Scotland and the rest of the UK in the days and weeks ahead.

A shocking death

Away from Covid, it's clear the death of Sir David Amess MP a week ago had a huge impact on many Scotsman readers. Columnist Brian Monteith made a heartfelt plea for politicians to dial down the bile, while Joanna Cherry reminded us the threat of violence cuts across party lines.

The weekend is nearly here, and we hope you're able to make some plans. If thinking of some travel to (or from) London, you might be interested in today's review of the new Lumo train service running between Edinburgh and London.

In tomorrow's paper...

And in tomorrow's Saturday Scotsman, we speak to Succession star Brian Cox, who's telling his life story in a powerful new memoir. We hope you'll be able to buy a copy, or join us here online.

We also visit Radley's pop-up shop in the St James Quarter in Edinburgh. It is, I am advised, "handbag heaven". We hope you'll be able to buy a copy, or join us here online

Thank you for your continued interest in The Scotsman. If we can interest you, there's huge value in a subscription to The Scotsman, through which you can secure unfettered access to our news, sport, business, opinion and lifestyle journalism, all produced for you here by our team across Scotland.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes, Neil McIntosh
