Israel’s pro-democracy protest movement is a phenomenon which has attracted worldwide interest for its remarkable size, stamina, focus and grassroots activism, notwithstanding the rising tide of police violence directed at its members.

In this struggle for liberal democracy, there are victories, reprieves and losses. This week, we witnessed one of those losses: The Netanyahu government bulldozed through a law nullifying the judicial review of ״extremely unreasonable״ government decisions.

It is the harbinger of the coalition's efforts towards a wholesale demolition of checks and balances, to strangle democracy and recast Israel in its own illiberal image.

The world is watching Israel's fateful battle against illiberalism, whether as inspiration or as a portent for their own societies.

I would like to invite you to be part of these extraordinary and important times by subscribing to Haaretz. I am confident that our on-the-ground reporting, deep expertise and sharp, cogent analyses cannot be rivalled, nor our commitment to the principles of liberal democracy, here and around the world. Join us.
