Greetings from sunny Green Bay, Wisconsin, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Wednesday, Aug. 17. The Saints and Green Bay Packers had a spirited joint practice on Tuesday afternoon before a few thousand Cheeseheads at Ray Nitschke Field on the campus of Lambeau Field. The Saints defense had its moments against the Packers offense, but the day was mostly a struggle for the Saints offense. Beat reporter Luke Johnson reports that the performance was basically the opposite of how the first-team offense played in the preseason opener against the Houston Texans. Two-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers tested the Saints defense and said afterward that the Packers saw "a lot of good stuff" from the Saints defense during the two-hour practice. Terrin Waack reports that both teams got a lot our of the session. Quarterback Jameis Winston did not participate in the practices on Tuesday, as he continues to work his way back from a sprained foot injury. Winston conducted an individual workout before the joint practices but then took the rest of the afternoon off, columnist Rod Walker reports. And finally, I visited with Ryan Ramczyk, the Saints' All-Pro right tackle and proud Wisconsin native, about the return to his home state and what it meant to him and his family. Ramczyk admitted he got a little wistful on the bus ride to Lambeau Field. My column. Less than two weeks away from final roster cuts, I took a stab at projecting the Saints' final 53-man roster. My early prediction for the Saints' final 53. Our Saints beat team is in Green Bay all week, so keep checking back on NOLA.com for more coverage, including updates from Wednesday's joint practice against the Packers. Cheers, Jeff Duncan |
