We just updated our review of the award-winning Zpacks Duplex. Don't miss it if you're gearing up for a backpacking trip this spring. We’ve been using this puppy for over a decade on dozens of treks and hundreds of nights and it’s still one of our ultralight favorites.

In the market for some new kicks? We also have a brand new review of the La Sportiva Spire GTX hiking shoes. We recently put them through the wringer while hiking in the Colorado Rockies - we're impressed.

The Kahtoola MICROspikes were the first traction devices designed specifically for hikers – a lighter, more approachable version of crampons that work with any shoes. They’re what you’ll find on most hikers’ feet when snowshoes are overkill on compacted, high-traffic mountain trails.

We like MICROspikes for their aggressive traction and excellent strength to weight. The chain links also enable them to pack down smaller than those made with more rubber material. There are lighter and cheaper options out there, but you won’t find better quality and durability for mixed mountain terrain than the MICROspikes.
