Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! A Path Forward Watch my interview here. On Tuesday, President Biden glossed over the real issues affecting the American people — as I anticipated. From a floundering national security agenda, to record high inflation and energy prices, and weak leadership on the world stage, President Biden has failed to show up for the American people. Our nation deserves more than what the Biden administration has given over the past two years. Earlier this week, I joined Brian Kilmeade on Fox News’ Fox & Friends to discuss these failures and my vision for a brighter future. I have confidence that the right leadership can empower Americans to live their version of the American Dream. Innovating American Housing
Watch my opening remarks here! This week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs held its first hearing. I used my time as Ranking Member to discuss how federal housing programs are failing despite trillions of dollars in funding. I also shared my hope that allowing private investments and reducing barriers to greater supply would increase opportunity for all American citizens. Read more about the hearing here. Safeguarding the Second Amendment Democrats’ policies continue to threaten Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms, as laid out in the Bill of Rights. This right does not vanish when they travel to other states. I joined Senators John Cornyn (R-Texas), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) and 42 of our Senate Republican Colleagues in introducing the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This legislation would allow individuals with concealed carry permits in their home state to exercise those rights in any other state that allows concealed carry, while still abiding by that state’s laws. Read more about the bill here. Pushing for Election Integrity The District of Columbia Council recently passed legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to vote in local elections in our nation’s capital. This move is a blatant attack on the integrity of our elections and disenfranchises American citizens by diluting the power of their vote. Both sides of the aisle should agree that this is unacceptable. Earlier this week, I joined Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and other Senate Republicans in cosponsoring a joint resolution denouncing this legislation and the Democrats’ absurdity in allowing illegal immigrants to vote in American elections. Read more about our resolution here. Defending Your Right to Freedom of Speech During a visit to Washington, D.C., students and chaperones from a school in Greenville, S.C., were kicked out of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, a taxpayer-funded building, for wearing pro-life apparel. This was shocking to hear! I joined a group of 27 Congressional Republicans in sending a letter to Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, demanding answers on this violation of free speech. I will continue to defend freedom of speech for all Americans. Read our letter here. Spilling the #SCSweetTea on a Community in the Upstate This week, I am spilling the #SCSweetTea on the community of Laurens, South Carolina. The Laurens Police Department received a noise complaint when a group of kids were playing basketball. The officers who responded to the call noticed the worn-out basketball hoop and created a community partnership to replace it. Incredible! When the best wear the badge, great things can happen. What could have been a negative interaction turned into an opportunity for this community to come together. I’m grateful for our men and women in blue and the work they do to make our neighborhoods safer and stronger. Read more about this story here! Sincerely, |
