BYO blintzes
Friend — Did you know the Garden Cafeteria's blintzes and milkhiks, were beloved by Forward writers and readers alike? It was affordable and delicious, and so it’s not surprising that Forward mavens headed there, located steps away from The Forward's historic building on East Broadway, to hold court and hold forth. The Garden is one of several stops on our virtual tour of The Forward’s Lower East Side, in partnership with Urban Archive. Our collaboration includes photos from The Forward’s extensive archives together with historic details and storytelling, all together in an easy-to-navigate map. This collaboration is one of the many ways we’re working to make The Forward’s extensive photo archives available for a digital readership. We know that these images can deepen our understanding of current events and connect the experiences of American Jews throughout history to what is happening today. More than 2,800 people have already explored The Forward’s tours with Urban Archives in the short few months they've been on the site. Making these resources available is important and powerful — but we need your help to do it. Help us share the photos from 123 years of Jewish American history by making a donation today.Your support will make collaborations like this possible and bring the thousands of images of Jewish American life to new and even wider audiences. Our tours with Urban Archive also include in-depth looks at Frank Crosswaith, a Black labor organizer; Charles Solomon, the 20th century Jewish, socialist politician and judge; Lorin Maazel, a conductor and music prodigy; Kamele Weitz, the boy cantor; and David Carey, star of the Yiddish stage and Jewish LGBTQ community member. Explore them all and donate to make more projects like this possible. Sincerely, Chana Pollack Archivist The Forward |
