| | | | | | A traditional Chinese medicine formula, Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (SLBZS) consists of ten herbs and has a long medicinal history as a treatment for chronic diarrhea. Supplemental forms that are marketed include tablets, capsules, powders and liquid extracts. Clinical studies have shown SLBZS to improve stool consistency, frequency, and abdominal pain in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS) and in those with ulcerative colitis. In patients with chronic diarrhea of unknown causes, SLBZS was found to be superior to antibiotic treatment for managing symptoms. When compared to conventional antidiarrheal medication, SLBZS was also associated with fewer side effects and greater patient satisfaction. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to strengthen the current evidence for this formula. Studies have also yet to be conducted in cancer populations. | | | |

| | | Take Note Of: Low-dose Naltrexone | | Naltrexone is an FDA-approved drug used to treat opioid and alcohol addictions. Recently, low dose naltrexone (LDN) has been promoted to reduce inflammation, pain, immune dysfunction, gastrointestinal and neurological conditions, and even cancer. Small studies showed benefits of LDN in patients with fibromyalgia. It may also be useful in managing diabetic neuropathy, in reducing depression severity in patients with major depressive disorder, and in decreasing inflammation in patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease. But anecdotal claims of LDN’s efficacy for cancer have not been evaluated in clinical trials. Further studies are needed to determine the safety and therapeutic potential of LDN. | | | |
