| | | An alkaloid found in plants including goldenseal, tree turmeric, and prickly poppy, berberine is used to treat inflammatory disorders, digestive conditions, and infections. It is also marketed in supplemental forms to support healthy blood sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Berberine has been shown in several small studies to reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, improve metabolic markers such as body weight, body-mass index (BMI) and weight circumference, as well as decrease inflammation. Berberine also decreased the risk of recurrence of colorectal adenoma. More studies are needed to determine its potential as a chemopreventive agent. | | | |
