| | | | | | Xiao Yao San (XYS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula with a long medicinal history as a treatment for depression, anxiety and stress. It is marketed in supplemental forms that include capsules, tablets, teas and extracts. Available evidence suggests that XYS is effective against depression. It also has fewer, less severe side effects compared to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), medications that are commonly used to treat depression. A modified version of XYS, Jia Wei XYS, has also been reported useful against depression and anxiety with more durable effects and lower adverse event rate compared to SSRIs. In addition, this formula was found to improve symptoms of sleep disorder. Larger, well‑designed trials are needed to expand the evidence base surrounding XYS and Jia Wei XYS. | | | |

| | Take Note Of: Budwig Diet | | An alternative cancer treatment, the Budwig diet was developed in the 1950s by the German biochemist Dr. Johanna Budwig. The diet involves consuming multiple daily servings of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese, as well as vegetables, fruits and juices. Processed foods, meats, most dairy products and sugar are prohibited. Some variations of the diet also involve coffee or oil enemas. This regimen is based on the theory that the combination of cottage cheese and flaxseed oil, a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, improves cellular functioning. But there is no evidence that it can help prevent or treat cancer in humans. Restrictive diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies whereas coffee enemas may cause electrolyte imbalance, infections, and inflammation of the rectum and colon. | | | |
