| | | | | | Emblica officinalis, also known as amla, is a deciduous tree native to India. The fruit, considered to be rejuvenating, is used in Ayurvedic formulations to treat diarrhea, jaundice, ulcers, headaches and inflammation, and as a general tonic to maintain health. Amla showed antibacterial, antioxidant, antiulcerogenic, antidiabetic, and antitumor properties in laboratory and animal studies. Small clinical studies found that it benefits patients with uremia (accumulation of substances in the blood that are normally eliminated in the urine) by reducing oxidative stress. Amla also lowered lipid levels in patients with hyperlipidemia and risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease in overweight adults. Because amla has strong antioxidant effects, it may interfere with chemo- and radiation therapies. | | | |

| | | Take Note Of Ephedra | | Ephedra, aka Mahuang, has a centuries-long history of use as a medicinal herb in China. It is often combined with other herbs to promote urination and to treat asthma, bronchitis, and cough. Ephedra is the source of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, alkaloids that stimulate the central nervous system. Ephedrine-containing supplements are promoted for weight loss and to enhance athletic performance. Ephedrine was shown to affect a modest increase in weight loss, but long-term effects have not been determined. Its role in improving athletic performance also remains to be evaluated. Misuse and overdose of ephedra have been associated with severe adverse effects including heart attack, stroke, seizure, psychosis, and death. The FDA banned the sales of ephedra-containing dietary supplements because of their significant risks. Despite the ban, these products continue to be sold online. | | | |
