On this day in 1989, The Canberra Times reported the federal government would be forced to breach Australian Labor Party policy to force commercial pilots to end action. Commercial pilots ignored a Federal Industrial Relations Commission order to lift their bans and limitations supporting a 29.47 per cent pay rise. The Minister for Industrial Relations, Peter Morris, threatened the imposition of hefty fines and other penalties but confirmed they could only be imposed if the government supported the airlines' use of common law and Section 45 D - and both actions would go against formal federal ALP policy.
