| The Ad Industry Extends an Olive Branch to Apple | |
| | Hi there and good morning. Similar to a pair of boxers circling the ring, waiting for the other to blink first, Apple and the media industry are locked in a fascinating sparring match. Apple, the worldβs first trillion dollar company, looking to parry any βantitrust blowsβ rained upon it with a defense of its privacy credentials. Meanwhile, the media industry challenges with claims that the free-flow of (consented) data funds free-to-consumer information, ergo it funds journalism and democracy. Lofty assertions on both sidesβ¦ This week we learned how the ad industry wants to open a dialog with Apple over its proposed restrictions to IDFA-access. But even if it has granted ad peddlers an audience in recent weeks, we should not necessarily expect a rapprochement any time soon. As our colleague Andrew Blustein unearthed in his research earlier this week, Appleβthe most valuable brand in the worldβcanned its membership of marketing trade org the ANA in February of this year. Plus it also hasnβt been part of the IAB since 2014, a period in which it rolled out its own service that relies on more proprietary technologies, as opposed to industry standards. There is no clear decision on who will be left standing tall come the end, but it is bound to be a fascinating interchange between now and early next year. What else we're covering: Marie Claire editor in chief Aya Kanai joined Pinterest in a newly created role of head of content and editorial partnershipsFacebook says it will achieve net zero carbon emissions this yearInstagram releases stickers that encourages people to voteFun Fact: Latinx-owned businesses can now label themselves as such on Yelp.
