Adam Smith gets a $100,000 pay raise to serve as deputy superintendent

Consolation prize: Adam Smith was recently passed over for the top job in the East Baton Rouge school district. However, he is going to have a sweeter paycheck this school year in the new role of deputy superintendent.

Under his contract approved Thursday, Smith will earn $235,000 a year, making him the second-highest paid administrator in the school system and earning him a lot more than other district leaders.

Police in court: Four Baton Rouge police officers entered not guilty pleas on Thursday in a case where they are accused of trying to cover up the beating of a man who was in custody. The men were all members of the department's now-disbanded Street Crimes Unit.
