Letter from the Editor
Brenda Oppong, PharmD Candidate, LECOM School of Pharmacy, has been doing some research on insulin delivery systems and the technology behind them. She had reviewed the T:Slim and Medtronic automated systems, with their ability to predict future glucose levels and adjust insulin delivery up or down based on CGM information. Although these devices are very convenient, many patients have been hesitant to use the devices, as they felt they did not want tubing coming out of their body.
The Omnipod system from Insulet does not have external tubing and is a more discreet device for many of our patients. In the past Omnipod has suffered because it lacked the CGM connectivity and real time management.
Omnipod has just introduce the Omnipod® 5, and this device has all the bells and whistles of the tubed pumps. This means that your patients can take advantage of the AI that is in the device to manage their glucose levels, and allow the device to predict future problems and correct them.
I think that you will find that the Omnipod® 5 will make a difference in many lives.
