AEG sued over car park assault that followed an Elton John show in LA

AEG has been sued by a couple who were assaulted in the car park after attending an Elton John show at the Dodger Stadium in LA in November 2022. The owner of the venue, home to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, as are the two men who allegedly assaulted the concert-goers, Reece Hopkin and Chad Reeves.

The victims of the assault, Jaime and Lillian Grenfell, argue that both AEG and the owners of the Dodger Stadium were aware of a number of similar incidents that had previously occurred in the venue’s car park, and that a lack of security guards, including LAPD-uniformed security personnel, were contributing factors.

“The lack of LAPD-uniformed security personnel diminished the safety and security of Dodger Stadium by creating a more relaxed atmosphere without the threat of immediate police intervention”, their lawsuit states. “This atmosphere emboldened wrongdoers at the stadium”. To that end, the Grenfells want AEG and the Dodger Stadium held liable for negligence.

NTIA calls for local authorities and law-makers to help as increase in noise complaints reaches "crisis level"

There has been a 53% increase in noise complaints made against nighttime businesses in London since the pandemic, according to a new study by the Night Time Industries Association. This is indicative of a trend across the UK, the trade body says, with specialist lawyer Sarah Clover adding that the increase in disputes between nighttime businesses and neighbouring residents is now at a “crisis level”.

“Noise complaints form a significant proportion of my work and the numbers of cases are increasing dramatically”, says Clover, a licensing and planning barrister at Kings Chambers.

“This is a trend seen particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic” and “the costs of litigation present huge burdens for businesses and local authorities”.

These disputes and the resulting costs could be avoided, Clover argues, if we had properly “functioning licensing and planning regimes”. Local authorities and law-makers should seek to address these issues urgently, Clover adds, with long term solutions requiring legislation, but other improvements that could be made by local councils more quickly.

According to NTIA’s survey of 20 London councils, there were 2440 noise complaints in those boroughs in 2018, which increased to 3732 over a twelve month period in 2022 and 2023. The number of noise abatement notices being issued has also increased, from 34 in 2018 to 51 in the 2022/2023 twelve month time slot.

Spotify ramps up protection for younger users, launches new Parental Guide

Spotify has joined the Tech Coalition, a tech industry initiative to “foster a safer online environment for young people by preventing and combating online child sexual exploitation and abuse”, and has also published a new guide for parents whose children use the streaming service.

“Safety is a top priority for Spotify, which is why we want to make it easier for young people and parents to understand and navigate the digital world”, says Marcelina Slota, Spotify’s Head Of Platform Integrity. “Today, we’re announcing that we have a new Parental Guide to help do just that. Our work in this space is ongoing and we’ll continue updating this resource - and others - to reflect the best and most up-to-date information”.

Slota also lists various measures Spotify has in place to protect younger users. That includes “a zero-tolerance policy against content that exploits children”, “platform rules that ban illegal and/or abusive behaviors that could harm children”, and the use of “machine learning signals” and “user reporting mechanisms to detect potential policy and/or legal violations”.

Spotify has teams who work “around the clock to review and promptly remove potentially violating or explicit content”, Slota adds, while also “connecting potentially vulnerable users to mental health resources when they search for content related to suicide, self-harm and disordered eating content”.
