Affordable housing boost as final approval given to massive new estate

More than 200 affordable homes are on their way to Leyland after councillors gave the green light to the latest phases of the redevelopment of the town’s former test track site.

The properties will make up just under a third of the 743 dwellings set to spring up on a huge section of the long-disused ex-Leyland Motors plot off Aston Way.

Elsewhere, remains of a 2,000-year-old Roman road could be sliced apart by a £65million Preston industrial estate if plans are approved.

The ancient highway, thought to link military settlements in Ribchester and Kirkham, runs across the 62-acre site between Ribbleton and Grimsargh where developers want to build 12 warehouses attracting up to 1,500 new jobs to the area.

Archaeologists may be asked to oversee any work which is carried out to ensure any finds are fully investigated and treated with care.

A sixth form college struggling desperately for space has asked Preston Council if it can build a new three-storey teaching block.

Cardinal Newman College, which has put two sets of expansion plans on hold in the last two years due to cost issues, says the new building would be "of critical importance" in enabling it to accommodate a growing student population.
