By KELLY P. KISSEL | State news editor Women at LSU are concerned about what the university is doing to help keep them safe. Allie Rice was killed near a railroad crossing on Government Street last fall and Madison Brooks died after being hit by a car last month, following a sexual assault. What's being done to make the community a safer place? A new Louisiana law says people convicted of felonies can serve on juries, but in many parishes that's not happening. What are the implications if parishes aren't attracting everyone who is eligible into jury pools? And there seems to be a disconnect between property owners and insurance companies in West Feliciana Parish. The parish is home to the Angola prison, and inmate-on-inmate crimes have been used in calculations and driven up insurance costs, and in some cases people haven't been able to obtain insurance at all. This is St. Francisville we're talking about. Sure, there's some crime, but it's not like other cities in the area. |
