| California fire district leveraging FirstNet, BeOn PTT from L3Harris to save significant LMR costs Author: Donny Jackson, IWCE's Urgent Communications Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District has teamed-up with L3Harris and FirstNet, built by AT&T, on a project to address coverage issues in its aging VHF infrastructure. The partnership anticipates lowering the rural fire district’s LMR capital costs approximately 60 percent by supplementing its VHF radio system with BeOn push-to-talk service and sharing tower sites. Importantly, the hybrid LMR-LTE push-to-talk strategy will move the area’s public safety communications forward and serve as a model to other U.S. public-safety entities. read more |

Forestry leaders expect increased holdover fires from 2019 season As snow and ice melt across Alaska, forestry workers are already seeing signs of hotspots from 2019 wildfires that smoldered over the winter and expect to see more as the season progresses. "These fires, last summer especially, given the really extreme, dry conditions around the state and especially in the Mat-Su late season with those fires, those fires burnt really deep down into the soil," Alaska Division of Forestry information officer Tim Mowry said. "They can hang on and linger and they just smolder and smolder and that snow actually serves as insulation for those fires and it helps them carry through the winter." State wild-land firefighters have already responded to check on hot spots reported in the area of the Deshka Landing fire. "When we say holdover fire, these aren't really fires. These are just pockets of heat that are still putting up smoke," Mowry said. KTUU-TV ABC 2 ANCHORAGE Alaska goes its own way to freeze out COVID-19 The layover would last five hours. Some cried. Most cheered. Kalitta Air 4371, with service to March Air Reserve Base in California, landed to refuel in Anchorage on the night of Jan 29. The cargo plane had been hastily converted to accommodate passengers and commissioned by the State Department to bring 201 Americans home. And while planes landing safely seldom make the news and delays rarely make anyone happy, this one did both. It came from Wuhan. The passengers kept cheering as the 747 taxied to the gate. At that time, World Health Organization officials still insisted that human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus seemed unlikely, and they wouldn't declare a global health pandemic for another 42 days. But listening and watching from his home office, Alaska's chief executive came to his own conclusion. "You just knew something was up," Gov. Mike Dunleavy told RealClearPolitics of the cheering expats and crying diplomatic staff. "This isn't a cold. This isn't the ordinary flu." MUST READ ALASKA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

North Carolina Hazmat one of few crews in state using new techniques to decontaminate gear VIDEO: Durham Fire-Rescue Hazardous Materials Team is leading the way in using new and existing equipment to decontaminate surfaces that may have been exposed to COVID-19. Firefighters suit up in Tyvek hazmat gear to spray all surfaces with chlorine dioxide. "Chlorine dioxide has been shown in multiple studies and by multiple federal agencies to kill the COVID-19 virus," said Ryan Campbell with the Durham Fire Department. To clean an entire firehouse, he says that it can be done by mixing packets of chlorine dioxide with water in a cup that sets off a gas aroma. The cleaning and ventilation process can take up to 5 hours. Durham firefighters are wearing more donated masks made by individuals and local businesses. "We're trying to get 1,200. We're about halfway there," said Durham Fire Chief Robert Zoldos. WTVD ABC 11 DURHAM Rolling Stones Release Song That May Become Anthem Of Self-Isolation VIDEO: The Rolling Stones have unveiled a new song the band thinks is perfect for these coronavirus times. The legendary band released the four-minute slow-burning bluesy and harmonica-driven "Living in a Ghost Town" on Thursday. "I'm a ghost/ Living in a ghost town/ You can look for me/ But I can't be found," sings frontman Mick Jagger, who wrote it with guitarist Keith Richards. The band explained that the song was one they were working on before the global lockdown and they decided to revisit it in isolation, thinking it "would resonate through the times that we're living in right now." The lyrics do certainly sound timely: "I'm going nowhere/Shut up all alone/So much time to lose/Just staring at my phone." The Stones' recently joined forces remotely to perform "You Can't Always Get What You Want" for the "One World: Together At Home," concert. HUFFPOST The high-tech fix that's helping to better protect DC Fire & EMS members on COVID-19 calls VIDEO: Over the last few weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, we've seen so many people expressing gratitude for first responders on the front lines - and rightfully so. On Thursday, DC Fire and EMS said it was the department's turn to say thank you. "What this whole experience has taught me is that you have to look to your neighbors and you have to rely on your community," said Dr. Ryan Gerecht, DC Fire and EMS' Assistant Medical Director. Gerecht was joined by other DC Fire and EMS leaders outside Fire Station 23, as they spoke about the community stepping up to meet a critical need for first responders. Here's the problem: firefighters and paramedics often use something called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure mask, better known as CPAP, to treat people in respiratory distress. WJLA-TV ABC 7 WASHINGTON DC Old school buses converted into ambulances to evacuate Virginia nursing homes A dozen employees are working through the pandemic on the assembly floor of First Line Tech in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They're seeing nursing homes around the country overwhelmed by COVID-19 infections, and racing to provide a way for fire departments to evacuate the elderly safely and quickly. "We took an old school bus and designed a kit that can go right inside of it to convert it over and handle six, 12, 18 patients," First Line Tech CEO Amit Kapoor said. "The idea for Ambubus came up after [Hurricane] Katrina where a lot of issues during Katrina was evacuating our nursing homes and hospitals. There weren't enough ambulances available. So it was practical to convert school buses." The "AmbuBus" kit is a metal frame, like an "erector set" that allows first responders to convert most buses into an emergency evacuation transport within two hours. WVEC-TV ABC 13 HAMPTON Military's Medical Response to COVID-19 in New Jersey May Lead to New Blueprint for Public Health Emergencies The U.S. military has long played a key role helping American communities respond to natural disasters and other public health emergencies. But the work it is doing during the coronavirus crisis is unique and may lead to a new blueprint for the way soldiers provide civilian assistance during a pandemic. The U.S. Army has deployed hundreds of Reserve soldiers trained as health care professionals to New Jersey over the past month to support the state's medical response to COVID-19, with doctors, nurses and other clinicians now serving in both field stations and at hard-hit community hospitals. Nearly 96,000 residents have now been diagnosed with the disease, including more than 5,000 who have died. The response includes three 85-member Urban Augmentation Medical Task Force units, new groups assembled in recent weeks by the Army specifically to backstop and support local health care systems swamped by the coronavirus.
