Juneau officials expect to receive fewer than 1,000 vaccine shots The City and Borough of Juneau is expecting to receive fewer than 1,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine coming to Alaska as soon as next week, according to city staff. During CBJ's weekly coronavirus update, Robert Barr, emergency operations center planning section chief said the allotment will likely be fewer than what the city needs to for all the people included in the first stage of Alaska's vaccine plan but additional shipments would follow. According to the state's three-phase vaccine plan, the first to receive the coronavirus vaccine are health care workers, long-term care residents and staff, first responders and anyone who may be asked to administer the vaccine such as community health aides. Asked whether or not that first shipment would be able to meet the community's needs, Barr said, "Probably not. Although we don't quite know at this point in time. At this point, it depends on how many individuals are willing to take the vaccine." JUNEAU EMPIRE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Warehouse fire in Illinois draws hundreds of firefighters, smoke seen for miles VIDEO: A massive warehouse fire in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood Thursday morning drew hundreds of firefighters to fight the massive flames, with smoke visible for miles. "We couldn't believe it," said Blanca Valderas, witness. "We were like in shock." The 4-11 alarm fire broke out an auto body supply factory at 4425 W. 16th. Street at about 8:45 a.m., as many workers at the Best Value Auto Body Supply had already started their shifts. Chopper 7HD flew over the scene as huge flames and thick smoke could be seen coming from the warehouse. Gloria Ramos, whose husband Raoul has worked at the plant for years, said he frantically called her as flames began to overtake the building. "He said one of the supervisors said there was a fire. They smelled fire on the inside," she recalled. Chicago Fire Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner for Operations Barry Garr said it was "200 feet of fire going down the block" when he arrived on the scene. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO San Francisco Firefighters Compete for Best-Decorated Fire House VIDEO: The San Francisco Fire Department is reviving a tradition that began and ended seven decades ago: a competition to determine the best-decorated fire station. The year was 1948 when San Francisco firehouses began a fierce competition to be named the best-decorated fire station. The grand prize was $1,000. They went all out, often covering the entire station with ornaments. The competition lasted three Christmases before a labor dispute ended it. Fast forward to 2020, and the fire department has decided to bring the tradition back, with a little help from a sponsor. "The San Francisco firefighters union — I mean, hats off to them! I could not finish my sentence on my idea before they were, ‘we are in!'" said Lt. Jonathan Baxter, spokesman for the San Francisco Fire Department. Now the grand prize is $3,000. The best-decorated firehouse will donate their winnings to the charity of their choice. The public is invited to check out the decorations from a safe social distance. KPIX-TV CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO Missouri firefighters restore 118-year-old firetruck VIDEO: A 118-year-old firetruck was restored by Willard Fire Chief Ken Scott and his firefighters. The truck, known as Queen City 2, was given to the Willard Fire Protection District from retired assistant chief Bub Herbert who attempted to restore Queen City 2 himself. Scott said it operated in Springfield during 1902 before rolling over during a fire emergency. The truck was eventually delegated to Clear Creek Park in Willard during the 60s. The firefighters finished the restorations by Veterans Day so it could join the parade. Scott said they worked on Queen City 2 until the morning of the parade. You can see the restored firetruck at the Willard Fire Protection District at 240 N. State Hwy Z, Willard, MO 65781. OZARKS FIRST COVID-19 sparks safety innovations for ambulance and medical transport operations PHOTOS: An evening news broadcast in March sparked an idea for Kolby Kolbet: Could a space-age looking helmet used in Europe play a role in reducing coronavirus risk while transporting patients in the U.S.? Months and many hours of testing later, the Sea-Long helmet worn by COVID-19-positive patients is now part of medical transport company Life Link III's standard operating procedure when transporting those requiring oxygen. Kolbet, vice president of clinical services for Life Link III, said he believes the company, with several air bases in Minnesota and Wisconsin, is the first in the country to use the helmets as part of medical transport. He hopes others follow their lead. The helmets not only increased the safety of Life Link III employees by containing respiratory droplets, Kolbet said, but they've also shown improved outcomes for patients during transport. Of more than 30 transports during which the positive pressure helmets were used as of late November, Kolbet said all patients showed improvement in their vitals.
