The collapse of the Bering Sea crab fisheries has put St. Paul Island at risk of losing some of its essential services. The city's economy is about 90% dependent on the harvest of snow crab, which closed for the first time in the fishery's history in October. Without Bering Sea snow crab or Bristol Bay red king crab — which has been closed since 2021 — the City of St. Paul is estimating a roughly $2.7 million hit. In light of those anticipated losses, St. Paul's city government declared a cultural, economic and social emergency in late October following the fishery closures, and subsequently implemented budgetary cuts, hiring freezes and other measures. Now, the Pribilof Island community faces the loss of its emergency medical services. The community of about 350 people has one emergency medical technician — who is currently off island.

Anchorage firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in a Ship Creek warehouse Thursday night that damaged a pet food processing facility, officials say. No one was injured in the fire reported just before 8:10 p.m., according to assistant chief Alex Boyd, spokesman for the Anchorage Fire Department. The fire was under control about an hour later. The first firefighters to get to the warehouse complex that covers the 2500 block of North Post Road discovered heavy smoke and flames showing from the second floor of one building, Boyd said. Commanders called for a second alarm, bringing the total units responding to 20 from about a dozen. Crews were able to get inside the building and keep the fire isolated to the building where it started, which suffered significant smoke and fire damage, he said. An apartment in the complex was not occupied when firefighters arrived.

Multiple school buses caught fire at a lot on Thursday afternoon, sending thick, black smoke around the Northwest Dallas area. Crews battled the fire at a lot near Interstate 35E and Manana Drive. It's unclear what led to the fire. Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) said it responded around 3:30 p.m. after receiving calls about a tractor on fire and that other tractors were around it. When crews arrived, they found that the fire had spread to other vehicles. An aerial view of the scene showed crews putting out flames that engulfed multiple school buses. Employees where the vehicles were stationed told WFAA that the company converts diesel vehicles to natural gas.

VIDEO: Did you know Macon-Bibb County has a Class 1-rated fire department? The department says that means you get a better rate on your home insurance. To keep that high standard, first responders need to train constantly, and now they have a state-of-the-art facility where they can work harder to keep you safe. Lieutenant Garin Flanders is pretty proud of the new Macon-Bibb Fire Training Academy. He headed up a committee to get all the seven levels in place. "There were times we were up till 1:00 in the morning," he said. The ten rooms came with a price tag of $3.2 million -- the lion's share of that came from SPLOST money, and the rest from the general fund. It all paid for three burn rooms, "Which are rated up to 1,500 degrees for eight hours," Lt. Flanders explained.

VIDEO: A bill that would allow city fire department bomb squads to conceal carry and make arrests during explosive threats advanced through a House committee Tuesday. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Meeks, was presented Tuesday morning. Meeks was accompanied by Todd Cardin, the Conway Fire Department's Bomb Squad Commander. Cardin said a bomb technician recently accompanied an ATF agent on a Perry County call where homemade explosives were found in someone's house. "The owner of the property came up, he was armed, and my bomb tech was not and an ATF agent was," Cardin said. "If something would've happened to the ATF agent, my guy would've been unprotected. That's why we're here today."

VIDEO: Emergency calls from Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue tell the story of how a dispatcher and people on scene of a snowplow accident worked to help save 51-year-old Marvel star Jeremy Renner on New Year's Day near his Reno home. Renner was clearing snow when he ended up being run over by his snowcat. A caller said Renner was bleeding and the dispatcher explained to the caller how to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound with a towel. This is one exchange between the dispatcher and person who lives where the accident happened. Caller: "He got crushed up on his right side. His right chest and upper torso. His ribs, it looks like they may be crushed. He's got a head wound as well." Dispatcher: "Keep the pressure. If it keeps bleeding you're probably not pressing hard enough. Remember to keep a firm steady pressure on the wound."
