Three injured in single vehicle rollover in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area A driver and two passengers were transported to the hospital Wednesday night following a single vehicle rollover on Remington Road about 100 yards east of Clearwater Road. Troopers are still investigating the incident. Responders were dispatched about 8:30 p.m. to the area for a reported vehicle rollover. A single vehicle traveling west on Remington Road appeared to have left the roadway, rolled over, and come to rest on its side. One individual was out of the vehicle when responders arrived and the other two were trapped in the vehicle. One victim was removed through a door of the vehicle and the second victim was removed after rescue crews spent about 30 minutes securing the vehicle and removing the roof of the vehicle. Two victims were transported directly to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, the third was taken to Interior Alaska Medical Clinic and later transported to Fairbanks Memorial. The seriousness of the injuries to the occupants is unknown. DELTA WIND PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Baltimore City Fire Department names its first LGBTQIA+ liaison VIDEO: The Baltimore City Fire Department, in an effort to increase diversity and equity within the agency, named its first LGBTQIA+ liaison, and some in the community are applauding the move. Baltimore City Fire Department paramedic Kyle Lovell is the department's first LGBTQIA+ liaison. He's a five-year-veteran of the department and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. "I love serving this community and I love helping people," Lovell said. The fire department has done much leg work to get to this point behind the scenes, starting with creating all-gender restrooms in the fire stations, and all members of the department received LGBTQIA+ awareness training, which will be ongoing. "Now we have an avenue to improve communication efforts, improve our interactions and improve our working relationships with LGBTQ members and with those in our community," Lovell said. WBAL-AM 1090 BALTIMORE Tragic Michigan Fire Leads to Iconic Wedding Photo & Happy Ending It was a sad and hard thing to see this past weekend when pictures emerged from a fire on Mackinac Island at the 120-year-old Brigadoon Cottage. The Memorial Day weekend fire to the historic location caused damage to the structure estimated to be close to $1 million. Thankfully there were no injuries, and as they say, things can be repaired and replaced, but people can't. And as much as the fire was the focus of the story, there was one other story unfolding that day. According to Jason St. Onge on the Mackinac Island News and Views Facebook page, one particular picture taken that day really did speak a thousand words. The picture, snapped by Cody Langhorne, showed just wed couple Jake and Elizabeth. With the fire blazing in the background the couple were seen walking down the street in their wedding attire. WCRZ-FM 108 FLINT Newly Painted Lifeguard Tower in California Supports Autism, Special Needs PHOTO: A specially painted lifeguard tower at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey is promoting the Los Angeles Fire Department's new Sirens of Silence program, which helps raise awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is a partnership with the county fire department, Fourth District County Supervisor Janice Hahn and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. The goal is to consider care for people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. "Our first responders know that keeping everyone safe cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach," Supervisor Hahn said in a statement. "The approach and protocols that work for one person may not be appropriate or helpful for an adult or child with Autism Spectrum Disorder." The department has developed new training with help from parents of children with autism, to give firefighters, paramedics and lifeguards more tools on how to treat someone and give them the best care possible. MARINA DEL RAY PATCH South Carolina city's first fire truck returns to service The City of Cayce will have its 1936 fire truck back on the streets Wednesday, June 9, as part of the South Carolina State Firefighters' Association 2021 Convention at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The fire truck, which was restored in 2019, will be escorted to the convention center at 11 a.m. from Cayce City Hall. It will be placed in the convention center for the duration of the conference. The truck, used by the City of Cayce from 1937–1948, was sold to another small town in 1955 and then bought back by the city about 10 years later. It sat still for a lengthy period and was fully restored after nearly two years of finding parts and doing repairs in 2019. It sits at the Cayce Historical Museum during the week, where guests can check it out along with the rest of the museum. COLUMBIA STAR ‘Sadly second nature': Florida fire crews respond to over 5,000 overdose calls in 2020 Overdoses in Jacksonville are increasing at an alarming rate, and the pandemic only made the situation worse. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said 2020 was the highest year it's seen for overdose calls: the department responded to 5,050 overdose calls. Another 2,800 calls were reported as opioid-related. In 2019, the department reported 4,140 overdose calls, and in 2018, it was just 2,417 overdose calls. JFRD spokesman Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said they have seen it all. "We've had crews respond to the same person three times in an hour and a half," he said. Prosswimmer said it doesn't matter the neighborhood, social class, age or gender. He said when he first began his firefighting career, overdose calls were unusual. "In the past five years, it has become sadly second nature," he said. WJXT-TV NEWS 4 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
