Four emergency responders in Juneau received coins last week signifying a successful CPR rescue in response to a patient going into cardiac arrest, and Fire Chief Rich Etheridge said the coin is part of an effort to increase CPR save rates in the capital city. On Thursday, Officers Hannah Malone, Jonah Hennings-Booth, and Dispatchers Tonya Kurtz and Alicia Cheeseman, were awarded a cardiac arrest save coin for their efforts during a recent cardiac arrest. Chief Etheridge said on Action Line that when he first started in the department, they have been working to increase CPR save rates in Juneau. "So we created this CPR save coin, in that if people stop and choose to do CPR and help save a life, they get a coin for that," he said. KINY-AM 800 / FM 94.9 JUNEAU The Bristol Bay region has seen multiple wildfires this month. The Iowithla River fire has expanded to 36,559 acres this week and is 10.5 miles northeast of Dillingham. Brentwood Reid, a public information officer with the Alaska Division of Forestry, said Wednesday the fire is being actively monitored. "We sent an aerial detection aircraft out there and they took a look at it yesterday, and we also are monitoring with satellites. And right now, there's only activity on the northwest corner of the fire," he said. The fire is 14 miles from Aleknagik, and although it is expanding in other directions, it has not gotten any closer to the community. Last week, fire boss planes dropped water in the area on its southwest border near Wood River. Reid said there's no heat in the southeast corner where the fire is pinned between the Iowithla River and a creek to the east. KDLG-AM 670/FM 89.9 DILLINGHAM Firefighters on Thursday worked to contain a wildfire burning in the woods in Anchorage near Campbell Park in East Anchorage. The fire was reported shortly before 3 p.m. near Elmore and Dowling roads. It drew a large response from fire crews, including helicopters that dropped water from the sky and planes that dropped retardant. The fire had grown to 13.1 acres and was 50% contained by 11 p.m., according to the Alaska Division of Forestry. "Responders estimate it will be 3-4 days to fully extinguish the fire including hot spot clean up," said a statement from the Anchorage Office of Emergency Management. City spokesman Corey Allen Young said no structures were immediately threatened. Young said nearby roads were reopened by Thursday evening but asked people to give crews space as they continue to work on the fire. ALASKA PUBLIC MEDIA |

VIDEO: A standoff has ended after a suspect opened fire at law enforcement and started a fire at a property in northwest Tarrant County, officials say. Just before 9:30 a.m., the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrived at a home in the 500 block of Indian Creek Road to serve a felony warrant. As deputies were moving toward the home, the suspect began firing multiple rounds from multiple sides of the home, officials say. Deputies then moved into a defensive position in effort to negotiate with the suspect, and SWAT was called to the scene. Terry Rosanky told WFAA she saw it all unfold. "It sound like pop, pop, pop," Rosanky said. "They went up and evidently and approached him and he shot at them four or five times and all hell broke loose." Officials say the suspect continued to fire rounds, and appeared to drop incendiary devices on the front porch of the home – sparking a fire that engulfed several vehicles located at the property. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Friday marks the tragic one-year anniversary of the catastrophic condo collapse that killed 98 people. 7News is remembering Surfside. We caught up with the brave rescuers who responded with the focus on how their specially trained canine companions aided in the search for survivors, as well as provide comfort to the grieving families of the victims, and to the search team members who toiled day and night in the rubble. Here's 7's Kevin Ozebek. Officer Jihovanna Mayorga-Garcia, City of Miami Police Department: "I can still smell it. You can still see the sadness. To watch the people on the pile, to me was the worst." It has been a year since the horrific collapse of Champlain Towers South, but the chilling memories are always there. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI VIDEO: Cardi B is playing with fire … literally. On the newest episode of her Facebook television series Cardi Tries, the 29-year-old rap star teamed up with comedian Lilly Singh to receive real-life firefighting training from the City of Monrovia fire department — letting out a couple terrified screams in the process. In an exclusive clip shared with Billboard of the Friday (June 24) episode, Cardi and Singh stand back and watch at first as Monrovia's fire chief Brad lights a controlled fire that springs to life so fast, it takes both ladies by surprise. "Oh snap!" Cardi yells, as the 33-year-old YouTube personality says: "I think my eyebrows came off!" Cardi is then guided by Brad and training captain Harvey while she sprays a small fire with a tank of extinguisher. BILLBOARD VIDEO/PHOTOS: So far this year there have been nearly four dozen drownings on the Great Lakes. 19 of them on Lake Michigan. From their perch at the entrance to the beach, lifeguards span the lake Michigan shoreline, keeping an eye out for trouble. It's something they're trained to do. That training will now be done through the Michigan City Fire Department. "I like putting my feet in the water and like playing in the sand!" said Jazmine Jennings. The Jennings family make the nearly one-hour drive from South Bend to Michigan City frequently to visit the beach. They're just some of the large number of visitors every year to Washington Park Beach... One of the biggest summertime draws to the area. "Our goal is to be a swimmer safe beach. 100%," said Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry (R). Over the last few years, Washington Park Beach has gone from low numbers of Lifeguards to being fully staffed. WSBT-TV CBS/FOX 22 SOUTH BEND VIDEO: A group of hikers from out of town had to be rescued on Camelback Mountain's Echo Canyon trail on Thursday. Firefighters said a large group from a women's retreat began hiking the trail around 7 a.m. with each person only having one small bottle of water. The heat became too much for them around noon so they called rescuers. Crews said the hikers were spread out all over the trail which made the rescue more difficult. First responders rescued a total of eight hikers from the mountain. Crews used a helicopter and a big wheel basket to get five of them off the trail. The remaining three walked down with help from firefighters. Three of the eight rescued, a 50-year-old woman, a 42-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were taken to the hospital in stable condition. KTVK 3TV & KPHO CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) |
